Interested in more details about Adam’s Experience at the Worlds? Of course
we are! Adam shared some reflections with us all in his responses to some
questions we asked him. Enjoy! (And thank you, Adam. We are proud of you
and want to live vicariously through you for this wonderful experience).
How many times and when have you competed at the World’s, in which bands
and grades?
I've competed at worlds 3 separate years.
2018 with LA Scots gr2
2019 with LA Scots gr2
and 2022 with St Thomas Alumni G1.
How was your jetlag when you got over to Scotland?
There's essentially no jetlag when you get to Scotland. There are two
flights really, one that gets in in the morning (those are tough). Mine got
in around 6pm so all I had to do was stay up late and I'd be fine! Luckily
that worked like a charm so no jetlag in Scotland. Coming back was a
completely different story though.
What do you look forward to eating and drinking the most when you visit
Scotland?
There's a lot of really great food in scotland. The indian food is always
incredible. This year however we had lots of incredible Isle of Cumbrae
Oysters and scottish seafood. The food scene in Glasgow has changed to be
lots of small plates / tapas so there's tons of really great food to try!
There are also a ton of places that do upscale scottish food so you can get
Haggis fritters etc.
You also have to risk your life at least once and eat a "Best Kebab" or a
4am Fish and Chips at Blue Lagoon.
As for drinking there are so many options! There's the Single Malt Whisky
society in Glasgow now so you can try pretty much any whisky you could
imagine. There is also a great variety of Gin in Scotland too!
Here's a small list of spots to go to in Glasgow for food and drink:
Mother India (for Indian food), Brel (on a sunny day in Glasgow), Outlier
(for incredible coffee), Gloriosa (for the Boquerones and the "Ultimate
After Dinner Cocktail"), Ox and Finch (for a wonderful lunch), Kelp (for
oysters, bubbly, and close proximity to the Piping Centre).
What will you remember and cherish most about this experience this year?
This was my first ever grade 1 at worlds. I think that experience in itself
will be the one I remember. There were a lot of nerves and pressure but I
think overall we're happy with our plays and are definitely looking forward
to the future.
I also had the opportunity to meet a ton of folks in the piping world and
become friends with many of them. It's really incredible to see how small
and tight-knit a community pipe band is.
Highlights and other reflections:
It's nearly impossible to get an iced coffee in Glasgow.
Also all coffee in Glasgow is served at roughly the temperature of the
surface of the sun.
Don't Uber, walk the entire city.
