After a couple of hiccups, I’ve managed to migrate our band email lists off of Google Groups over to Mailman. For those who are curious about the details, I’ve written up a postmortem document and posted it on Box here: https://app.box.com/s/qx4llgs7jf7b41z922xkcdeufnj7npqh https://app.box.com/s/qx4llgs7jf7b41z922xkcdeufnj7npqh

As of now, we should all be using the list addresses at “lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org” since those are the new lists.

As a point of information, the Mailman list management software has existed for many years, and most operations you’ll want to perform (post to a list, join/leave a list, update your email receipt settings, etc.) can be done simply by sending the right email to

<listname>-request(a)siliconvalleypipeband.org

You may find it much easier, however, to use the web interface to update your settings. To do this, go to https://lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org https://lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org/ and create an account. If you did this already a couple days ago, you’ll have to do it again (see the postmortem for why). The account is not necessary for email to work; it is only for the web interface. The one thing that the web interface allows you to do that you can’t get via email is to view old posts to the list. Of course this isn’t interesting today, since the lists are effectively brand new, but in the future if you want to look at an old message that you deleted, it’ll still be in the list archive.

Among the settings you can modify for each list are:
* choose to receive emails as a digest or individually
* set your name to appear next to your email address when you post to a list
* configure multiple email addresses (for example, your work and your personal email) to be associated with a single person, and select which one should get messages from the list

As always, if you have any other questions or difficulties, feel free to pop into the #techsupport channel on Slack and ask away!
