Band email lists

Hey everyone,

I haven’t yet been able to meet 1:1 with everyone yet, so here’s a quick cheat sheet for the band email lists.

  1. Think of the lists as broadcast. They are for announcements, for information that everyone on the list should know about.
  2. They’re email. Like, that’s obvious, right? But that means that delivery isn’t guaranteed to be fast (some folks have gotten messages from the list a day after they were sent). But other email cautions apply as well. For instance:
  3. Because they’re mailing lists, your email provider might mistake these messages as spam, and
  4. If you include big attachments, messages will really look like spam and may not even get sent.

So, if you need to distribute a big file (say, event logistics PDF, or sheet music), then put it on Box and just send out the link.

If you want to invite discussion, go to Slack. You can totally make your own channel and invite people to it, then leave the channel or even delete it when you’re done. Slack even lets you share files within a channel, so that’s another way to accomplish file distribution to a small number of people.

Finally, please target your message to the narrowest applicable audience, so that people don’t get into the habit of ignoring messages from the list.

Here are the lists that we have:

bod(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org mailto:bod(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org - Board of directors
drums(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org mailto:drums(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org - Drummers in all corps
parade(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org mailto:parade(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org - Everyone involved in the parade band
g3(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org mailto:g3(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org - Everyone, pipers and drummers, in the grade 3 band
g4(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org mailto:g4(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org - Everyone, pipers and drummers, in the grade 4 band
allband(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org mailto:allband(a)lists.siliconvalleypipeband.org - Everyone in the whole SVPB organization

If you are not on a list but you want to be on the list, send a message with the subject “subscribe” to listname-request at siliconvalleypipeband dot org. For example, to join the “drums” list, send a message to drums-request(a)siliconvalleypipeband.org mailto:drums-request(a)siliconvalleypipeband.org with the subject “subscribe” and an empty message body.

The lists are moderated, so that random people on the Internet can’t just join up, but we do want to allow interested folks (parents, carpools, etc.) to participate.

Thank you all!
