  1. September Featured Band Members:

    Malachi Johannsen & Marie Rude

Malachi Johannsen

Current role in band: Piper in the G3 band.

Original hometown: Ripon, CA

Current hometown: Modesto, CA

Hobbies include: playing many instruments: low D-whistle, mandolin,
uilleann pipes, piano, and fishing.

Past pipe bands: Emerald Society Pipe Band of Ripon, City of Sacramento
Pipe Band

Number of years playing: 8 years

Favorite Tune: A Glasgow Week in Hamburg

A fond memory: The first set of pipes I got when I was seven. I could only
play the drones because the reed was super hard, but taking them out of the
box and holding them after years of wanting a set of pipes were this kid’s
dream come true.

Marie Rude

Current role(s) in band: Previous grade 3 bass, now grade 3 tenor

Original hometown: Hayward

Current hometown: Temecula 👎[image: Emoji]

Occupation and/or other hobbies: Massage Therapist.(who has time for any
other hobbies outside of pipe band??)

Past pipe bands: This is my home band, though I was with Prince Charles
very, very briefly and have done some gigs with House of Scotland...also
played with UC Riverside this season.

Number of years playing: 10

Favorite tune: I don't know the name of it (when do we ever?), but it's a
Gordon Duncan reel

A fond memory from my drumming career thus far: Running into every trash
can while carrying the bass. Also all the friends and great people I've
met, etc. etc. [image: Emoji]

  1. YOLO (You only live once), So You Should Do SOLOs

Who:  drummers and pipers

What:  start the prep now for next season as a soloist

When:  every Sunday, starting September 25, Noon to 3PM (?) weather
permitting

Where:  Edith Morley office buildings in Campbell

Why:  nothing is better (or worse!) than playing in front of an educated
audience

How:  details below

Now is the perfect time to pick your solo tunes and begin practicing for
2023.  For drummers, I'm going to offer to be your "study buddy" this Fall
but it will be up to you to secure your own piper(s) for the contests.  I
hope pipers in the band will volunteer to play for drummers since, I
promise, it will make you better.

Bonus:  Adam will join us beginning October 2 and can help fix instruments
and also provide feedback.

We'll do our own unique spin on "last lad/lass standing" by saving
piobaireachd for the end of each session.

Questions:    Rob Boyd, rboyd@scu.edu or cell, 408-687-0149
